In the article, “Blue Collar Brilliance”, published in the summer of 2009 by Mike Rose in the American Scholar, Rose persuades people that the amount of someone’s educational level doesn’t justify their intelligence level and we shouldn’t base our opinions of their intelligence purely off their jobs. Since this article was published in the American Scholar his target audience is people of higher education and those who might hold stereotypes of blue collar workers. Rose is highly successful in persuading his audience to form new opinions on blue collar workers and their overall intelligence levels. He emphasizes his credibility throughout the article with anecdotes, a well thought out organization of his paper, as well as an elevated vocabulary
challenge the notion that IQ is a directly correlated predictor of success. Gladwell does this byThrough presenting various case studies and examples that support his argument Gladwell challenges the notion that IQ is a directly
IQ while a good evaluation of a persons ability to solve logic problems is not the epitome of intelligence. If you have IQ with out practical or social intelligence in a significant quantity it wont garner you much success in the world. It needs an addition of that practical or social intelligence in order for you to become exceptionally successful within the world. The examples put forth in the book are of Chris Langan who’s IQ was in the 190 to 200’s range, Terman’s Termites (a group of students with IQ’s of 140+ that Terman followed for his Genetic Studies of Genius.), and Robert Oppenheimer. We also have two differing tests one that touches on just IQ and the other that touches on practical intelligence.
Our thoughts and reactions to Simon Abbott are: his main purpose on the island was to show and emphasize the savagery that took place between the group of boys. Golding used his fainting problem as a way for him to communicate with the beast and reveal the total evil that the island is succumb to. The author also used Simon’s brutal murder as a way to further emphasize the savagery of the boys and display a loss of innocents for Piggy and Ralph. Simon Abbott’s body has not yet been found from the Island case. Based on the statements from the other victims Simon is not guilty of any crimes that may have taken part on the island.
In the story "Outliers", Malcolm Gladwell uses a series of experiments and logical reasoning to clarify that practice determines the success of one's destiny. "In fact, by the age of twenty, the elite performers had each totaled ten thousand hours of practice. By contrast the merely good students had totaled eight thousand hours" (Gladwell 12). The experiment showed that the students that excelled had practiced a lot more than the merely good proving more practice determines success. In addition, the studies found from the experiment reveal that there were no "naturals" with the innate talent to be an elite performer.
Lastly, passage three contrasts with passage two in that society believes that high IQ, an innate ability that is out of one’s control, is the determinant in how successful people will be. However, innate IQ only matters to a point and beyond that there is no significant difference between high IQ people and average IQ
Many people think that just because someone is academically smart they’ll automatically achieve success. Just because someone has a high IQ doesn't mean they're guaranteed success. Authors such as Malcolm Gladwell in the Outliers gives many examples of why academic intelligence may not be enough. Social class, IQ, practical intelligence, and luck are key factors of achieving success.
Leonid Fridman writes about the disrespect and ridicules smart people get for how they live and how it greatly impacts our country's future. Smart people are bullied and then in a lot of cases thought
Malcolm Gladwell insists that IQ is not the determining factor in one’s ability to achieve success because he believes that opportunity and chance play critical roles in one’s journey to achieve success. In Outliers, Gladwell includes Christopher Langan story growing up. Langan has an IQ of one ninety-five, “The average person has an IQ of one hundred… Einstein one fifty” (Gladwell 70). Langan is considered “the smartest man in America” and sometimes “the smartest man in the world”.

Intelligence is what gets us by everyday; it gets us jobs and helps to provide for ourselves and others. I'm not saying you need to be the smartest person ever to be successful, but you at least have to be smart enough. Gladwell mentions that "Langan’s IQ is 30 percent higher than Einstein’s. But that doesn’t mean Langan is 30 percent smarter than Einstein. That’s ridiculous.
In the article, “The War on Stupid People”, Freedman depicted the emphasis the society has placed on determining or facilitating human capacity has failed the less intelligent people. Freedman detailed his argument by providing evidence on how intelligence played a huge role in employment opportunities and academic performance. Moreover, he illustrated the issue of the economically disadvantaged/less intelligent, the current approach is flawed in the favoring the intelligent. He asserted with the evolution of the view of intelligence to the point as becoming a detrimental measure for human worth. He developed his main message by first established a neutral tone by providing statistical evidence of what a significant role intelligence has played,
People believe students who go to college have intelligence more than students who’s in the work field after high school. UCLA Professor Mike Rose explain intelligence should not be measure by the level of school students completed and students can be successful in the work field or without finish school. In fact, Rose used his mother as an example of students might have intelligence without finish school. For instance, his mother drop off school in middle school who is a waitress at the coffee shop she has intelligence to memorize all the customer. According to Rose “he observe and studied the working habits of blue-collar job workers and have come to
Having an opportunity of practical intelligence is important for achieving success because people can change the situation to their desire by using practical intelligence. Even though asserting oneself is also an important requirement to succeed by appealing with confidence, better results of asserting yourself are guaranteed through capability of practical intelligence which is the ability to knows what, when, and how to say. In chapter 4 of Outliers, practical intelligence is mentioned as a key to success. For example, there is a case of Chris Langan and Robert Oppenheimer in outliers that shows the importance of practical intelligence. Even though they both have high IQ, Robert Oppenheimer succeed, but Chris Langan does not.
He wants use to see that blue-collar jobs take more intelligence then what we think: it's more than just an elementary job. Mike Rose explains to us as the reader how intelligence is the main factor in becoming successful. I agree with him 110%. Intelligence is not
