In the book, The Hunger Games, one of the main events is when Katniss volunteers for her sister, Prim, to participate in the annual Hunger Games. After reading this event, I was very surprised. I noticed that Katniss surprised herself by saying she would volunteer, but then quickly recovered once she remembered that the reaping would be shown on television. “…this is upsetting me and I don’t want to cry. When they televise the replay of the reapings tonight, everyone will make note of my tears, and I’ll be marked as an easy target.
Before even beginning to write this essay, The Hunger Games and the character Katniss were the first things to pop into my mind while discussing The Hero’s

Ever wanted to go against authority? Challenging authority is always a brave thing to do considering that they are supposed to be the top dog. Those who stand up to authority for the right reason are brave and I greatly admire them. For example, Katniss off the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins; shows great bravery when herself and Peeta decide that they do not want to give the Peacekeeper; nor the government what they want. What the government does as a form of entertainment, to the people, is wrong and inhumane.
Katniss Everdeen is the protagonist of Suzanne Collin’s Hunger Games book and film series. In the dystopian landscape in which the book is set, children between the ages of twelve and eighteen must register themselves for a random selection for a fight to the death. Even from the beginning, Katniss was breaking societal expectations; one example of which being when she volunteered when her younger sister Primrose was selected. Being from such a poor district, Katniss was not expected to do well in training for the games, but she pulled a very high score when she shot an arrow towards the game-makers. No one expected Katniss to be so strong and resilient, but her own agenda was just getting home to her family.

We live in a world where people are often desensitized to certain things around us. These things we have become numb to are varied and fluctuate between subjects, however, the way the citizens in the book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, are desensitized is different than how we are. In The Hunger Games, the country of Panem is separated into twelve districts, not including the Capitol. The Capitol controls all the districts and hosts the annual Hunger Games, in which one male tribute and one female tribute are chosen from each district and sent into the games to fight each other to the deaths. The last one standing wins.
In the film: The Hunger Games, teenagers are picked into a killing games that consists of 24 tributes, two from the 12 districts, one male and one female, to kill each other until one person remains. When the time comes, Katniss did not expect that her sister would be picked in the reaping. It was Prim's first year, afterall, this is her first time. In an attempt, Katniss volunteers for her sister to save her life. She tells her sister that she would try to win for her.
In the Hunger Games the only reason Katniss Everdeen was in the games was because her sister, Primrose was reaped, in other words she was randomly chosen from her district to fight to the death in the arena. Katniss took it upon herself to volunteer in her place saving her life. But what Katniss didn’t know is that she was only delaying the inevitable. At the end of Catching Fire, the second installment in the Hunger Games series, after Katniss destroys the arena dome, the capitol bombs district 12 in attempts to kill everyone there. Prim escapes with Gale and several others which hints towards Prim's death and that she can’t escape her true fate for a third time.
