The novella “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbecks explores the complex of Broken Dreams. Set in the 1930’s during the Great Depression, the two migrants, George and Lennie, traveled from place to place in search of a place to call home. They planned their “American Dream.” Steinbeck presents the good and bad aspects of human nature. In through the struggles and hardships faced in the story “Of Mice and Men”. The particular characters George, Lennie, Candy, and Curley’s wife all had dreams of living a better life, but their dreams were struck by the harsh realities of the consequences. In Of Mice and Men broken dreams highlight human hopes because it focuses on reality that many people faced during the Great Depression.
Although the novella the characters George and Lennie shoot fulfill the American Dream of buying a farm and making it a place to call home. Then Candy joins the dream to help out and do the same with the two men. The American dream became a broken dream because of Lennie’s strength that he can not control. However, as a woman in the 1930’s she faced discrimination and difficult obstacles while trying to achieve her dreams because she was a woman. Also Curley’s wife was a young girl at the time she was 15 trying to pursue her dream. In the novella Curley’s wife explains, “Seems like they ain’t none of them cares how I gotta live. I tell you I ain’t used to livin’ like this. I coulda made somethin’ of myself.” She said darkly, “Maybe I will yet.”(Steinbeck 86). Curley’s wife's American dream was ruined because her mother would not allow her to pursue it and she also never got the letter back from the man.
