John Steinbeck believes that the American Dream is not realistic; conversely he establishes strong points, the American Dream is really what one makes of it. John Steinbeck wanted to prove in his book that the American dream was not achievable. He created the story Of Mice and Men to prove his point by telling a heartbreaking story. John Steinbeck created characters that had dreams as well as plans to achieve them, but their dreams were out of reach. He even put characters in his story that tried to explain to people the reality of their "fantasies".
This story can be greatly discouraging to those who carry dreams that they wish to attain. The American Dream is what one enacts on. If one lives life with a pessimistic mindset, they will never achieve what they crave in life or be content with the season they are living in. The people on the ranch dreamed of a better life, but constantly complained about where they were at in life then, rather than being content with the life they were living. In order to catch your dreams, one has to be willing along with the drive to accomplish them. Nothing comes easily; it takes time and dedication in order to be successful.

The only evidence given in the story is how everyone thinks they are living an unfavorable life. John Steinbeck did not create any characters that were living their own personal American dream, which is someone who has goals that are attainable, and chooses to be grateful for what they have now. If John Steinbeck had given the story characters that fail to achieve their dreams including others who put in the work to do so, one would be able to compare and contrast real-life situations with his story.
