Chapter One The first chapter of the book introduced two men named George and Lennie. Lennie is a man with a special disability and George is a man who is extremely intelligent, but George took care of Lennie like he was his own kid. Lennie is obsessed with petting mice and keeping them once they have died. George and Lennie always argued about things that Lennie had done, such as wanting ketchup on everything and keeping dead mice. George decided that he should try to find a puppy or rabbit for Lennie, so that he wouldn’t keep killing mice by petting them too hard. My reaction to the first chapter of the book wasn’t dramatic, but I had a feeling of sadness for Lennie throughout the chapter. I felt bad for Lennie because of his disability and the fact that he was very poor. The book started to get interesting because I figured out things about new characters and I began to understand the book more. I realized that there would be drama between Lennie and Curley based off of the comments that Curley made toward Lennie. George showed how much he cared about Lennie by taking up for him when Curley was disrespecting Lennie, so it showed me that George was a true friend. One of my favorite quotations from the second chapter of the book is something that one of the swamper’s said to George and Lennie. The swamper said, “Curley's like a lot of little guys. He hates big guys. He's alla time picking scraps with big guys. Kind of like he's mad at 'em because he ain't a big guy. (pg.26)” That is my favorite quote because it helped me to understand the type of person that I should expect Curley to be like throughout the book.
