Many people in the world build relationships with others and rely on one another for support. However, there are also others who are or wish to be isolated from the rest of the world. In the story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, many workers have difficult times creating stable relationships due to their migrant state. Crooks is the loneliest character in the story because he is isolated from everyone else, he has a different ethnicity from others, and he feels hopeless about his life. Crooks is lonely because he is isolated from everyone else on the farm. On page 66, Steinbeck describes Crooks' room as "a little shed that leaned off the wall of the barn" which is away from the building that everyone else on the ranch lives in. When Crooks tries to explain to Lennie racial discrimination on the ranch, Crooks says, “’ S’pose you didn’t have nobody. S’pose you couldn’t go into the bunk house and play rummy ‘cause you was black. How’d you like that? S’pose you had to sit out here an’ read books. Sure you could play horseshoes till it got dark, but then you got to read books. Books ain’t no good. A guy needs somebody – to be near him.’”(72) A migrant worker may be alone for most of his life and not show that he needs someone to be with him. However, everyone needs someone because it is part of human nature as Crooks says. Crooks may present himself as a very independent person, but Crooks is in reality, a very lonely person and wishes to have someone to talk to everyday, just like everyone else on the farm. Since Crooks is human like everyone else, he says “a guy needs somebody – to be near him”, however, everyone refers to Crooks as the person who stinks and the negro stable. Everyone on the ranch refuses to be near Crooks because he is a different ethnicity from them. Crooks is lonely because he feels hopeless about the life he has now and for the rest of his life.
