Dreams and hopes In the history of the US one of the main themes would be the Impossibility of the American dream. This theme was one of the themes that the great American writer, John Steinbeck used time and time again. One of these times would be in his book Of Mice and Men were the readers witness multiple dreams crumple, in particular Candy’s , Crook’s , and Curley’s wife's dreams. One of the dreams that starts and end in this novel would be Candy's hope that maybe, just maybe he could go to a quiet place where there is no threat of him being “canned”. The audience becomes aware of this dream when Candy overhears George and Lennie talking about the the rabbits and their plan for land and Candy can't help himself …show more content…
Candy reveals how he knows that just like his dog he is old and useless and just like his dog “they’ll can me purty soon” (60). As the story advances this dream becomes progressively more and more realistic. As soon as this dream seems like nothing can stop it, George and Candy are actually going to put money down to buy that land, they discover that Lennie accidentally killed Curley’s wife. At this point George is realizing that he’ll probably have to be the one to kill Lennie, and Candy is deeply scared that something that seemed like such a sure thing to happen (his hope) now seemed very unlikely to happen. “Now candy spoke his greatest fear. “You and’ me can get that little place, can’t we, George? More importantly the readers learn that Curley’s wife’s dream was to be an actor, and have “all them nice clothes”(89). The readers learn that Curley's wife once had the opportunity to be one of those famous actors, but her mother stood in her way forcing her to stay grounded. “Coulda been in the movies, an’ had nice clothes-all them nice clothes like they wear. An’ I coulda sat in them big hotels, an’ had pitchers took of me.”(89) Finally Curley’s wife finds Curley and marries him out of spite. This wasn't very smart because of a few reasons but the most important would be that now it would be nearly impossible for Curley's wife to become an actor because she is stuck on the ranch with Curly, and She can't really file for a divorce because of the current time period. This really emphasises the theme of the impossibility of the american dream because of the fact that being famous and successful is really the american dream, and Curley’s wife couldn't do that, and can't do that for several reasons. All of these dreams have two similarities. One thing that that they all had in common was that they all were part of the american dream of happiness and success. The second similarity would be that
