In Of Mice and Men, many characters experience loneliness and alienation, and throughout the novel all three characters just want a friend or someone to understand them. Crooks' skin color determined his worth and he ended up being kept apart from the other guys. Candy had regrets and hesitation regarding sharing their opinions about killing his dog with the other ranchers and losing it. Curley's wife then felt alone because she did not have anyone to hang out with while the guys were working. Even though they are all together, there are still characters who do not have many friends or confidants. Candy working on the farm had seen and passed by many other men working every day but he had no one to call his own in family terms. Though living and growing old with these men on the farm the men put pressure on Candy to kill his dog because he had no family other than his dog. Candy's dog was his best friend and his only family member. However, Carlson shot the dog saying it was old and had no purpose, and this leaves Candy alone and regretting the dog's death. He was without companionship after his dog passed away. This is because their circumstances are unique and it is difficult to find someone who truly understands them, including the period. Their feelings of alienation branch from their experiences with hate or discrimination. There were obstacles in their journeys and from their perspective and even though the circumstances in which these three characters found themselves varied, they all experienced feelings of isolation. When everything is taken into account, they were all trying to find friendship and acceptance because they were all experiencing loneliness and alienation in some way. The obstacles and lives of these characters were different and consisted of different restrictions but at the end of the day you die and you live and these connections and friendships become ones you would always remember. This alienation was temporary and the achievement of finding someone to talk to and feel like a friend was a common factor for these
