The book “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck seems to have a main theme of humans’ relationship with loneliness and incapability, because every person has some of both qualities.The book is about two young men, George and Lennie, who a dream to someday have enough money to own a plot of land and live life the way they want, however, Lennie has an intelligence issue which causes him to repeatedly get in trouble and lose his job, which makes George quit to go work somewhere else with Lennie. George and Lennie land a new job working on a ranch and start saving up money to buy their own land, but just before they get enough money to leave, Lennie accidentally kills a woman and runs away. One of the farmhands (the woman’s husband) plans on catching Lennie and torturing to death for killing his wife. George knew this and killed Lennie before the farmhands could find him, saving him a lot of pain and misery. The first instance I recognized the theme of loneliness and incapability in this book is the exposition. George and Lennie are each others only friends, and Lennie is lost without George because he can’t work or communicate well on his own. She talks about how she used to live with her strict mother who was always holding her back from new opportunities, and how she was unable to make a life for herself after listening. To escape from her mother, she eventually marries a man and runs away with him. However, After some time being together she started to get lonely because her husband was never there for her, and he hated it when she talked to anyone else. Now not only is she lonely, she’s also incapable of being truly satisfied because her husband is never there for her and she can’t talk to anyone
