It was a hot sunny evening in the Salinas River in Soledad. One side of the river had beautiful hills and mountains covering the earth. On the other side green vegetation near the edge of the river. Rabbits, lizards, and birds enjoyed another wonderful day but for George and Lennie it was the beginning of the end of a tough journey. Authors often use characters in their novels to help reflect the importance of their work. Novels or plays, these characters are known as morally ambiguous characters, a character that can’t be identified as evil or good. The fictional novel by John SteinbeckOf Mice and Men”, shows that George is the perfect example of morally ambiguous character because he protected and defended Lennie, but he also insulted him behind his back and murdered him. George always protected Lennie even when it meant running away from the law enforcement. Due to Lennie’s mental illness and huge size he accidentally killed mice, hurt a girl and killed a woman. George helped Lennie hide and was willing to move from place to place just to keep Lennie from going to jail. George also defended Lennie whenever someone talked bad about him because he knew Lennie couldn't comprehend what was happening and couldn't defend himself. George often got frustrated with Lennie and yelled at him, insulted him, and threatened him, by telling him they wouldn’t get the animals he wanted when they got their dream house. George also told Lennie that whenever he was in trouble he had to go to the bushes. When Lennie went to the bushes after killing the women, George told the men that were looking for him the opposite direction he had actually gone. Unfortunately, he did not use this opportunity to help Lennie escape. Once George found Lennie he used a gun he had stolen to kill
