Gender prejudice was also a common concept during the 1930s in America. There were certain stereotypes of how a typical woman should act during this time period. In Of Mice and Men, Curley’s wife is the case. Curley’s wife is described within the novel as a troublesome and promiscuous character. How Curley’s wife is treated is a typical prejudice applied on woman during the 1930s. “A girl was standing there looking in. She had full, rouged lips and wide-spaced eyes, heavily made up. Her fingernails were red. Her hair hung in little rolled clusters, like sausages. Steinbeck uses foreshadowing in this quote that something will happen later on between Lennie and Curley’s wife. Moreover, the words “poison” and “bitch” are expletive languages that Steinbeck uses. By using these words, it highlights the treatment of women during this time period. Other ranch workers say “loo loo?” and “jail bait.” Curley’s wife is seen as promiscuous, the workers say that “she got the eye goin’ all the time on everybody.” They say that she has an inappropriate behaviour as women ‘should’ have demure, shy, modes, truthful, quiet, and naive. However, there is a specific reason why Curley’s wife acts in these ways. She is so lonely since she is the only female around the ranch and wants somebody to talk to and be open-minded. Therefore, she sets off to find somebody but others see this as “having an eye on everybody” and causing problems by having lots of sexual relationships.
