Throughout the year, my mind has matured after reading the many sophisticated novels and inspirational true stories assigned to me in english class. Although many of my basic principles that I believe will lead to a happy life have remained the same, one major principle has drastically changed thanks to the reading I did this year. I use to believe building yourself up through education and financial stability were the two most important things to happiness. After reading Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, building relationships became more important than financial stability, which had moved down to the third most important thing on my list of things that will lead to happiness. The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros really solidified my stance on why building yourself up through an education is very important to happiness. In Of Mice and Men, a key component of George and Lennie´s ability to strive for their goal of happiness is their companionship together. From this companionship I discovered the importance of building relationships with others. WIthout a family that helped nurture me and get me out of my tough times, I do not believe I will be as happy as I am now. I may still be depressed from tragic events in my past. Through friends I´ve had many happy experiences and gotten much help from them in school. When I go outside to bike, or play tennis, it is always more fun to have a friend around to play with me.
