Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck is about two men, George and Lennie, who travel together. George is Lennie’s caretaker and friend. Because of his disability Lennie sometimes causes trouble and George is responsible for it. Both men have a dream of living on the fat of the land with their own house and animals. In the novel, Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck conveys that friendship/companionship is a basic human need. George and Lennie travel together and have each other’s back while sharing the same dream throughout the story. Candy’s dog was a sheep dog and Candy has kept him around since his dog was a pup. “Yeah. I had ‘im ever since he was a pup. God, he was a good sheep dog when he was younger.” (Candy, 24). For example, Crooks is the stable buck who has no one. He is mistreated and lonely because of his race. Crooks has his own room in the barn and usually keeps to himself. He is jealous of the relationship George and Lennie has because they are so close. Crooks tells Lennie how he has nothing to measure by and he is just a lonely guy in a barn.
