In the short story “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck. The main characters, George and Lennie, find a job at a farm. Crooks is an African American that has worked on the ranch for a while, and he takes care of the animals and Candy is an old man that lost his hand in a machine accident. The story is about George and Lennie working to get their dream place one day. In his novel “Of Mice and Men” the author John Steinbeck uses Crooks and Candy in order to reveal they are the loneliest characters on the ranch. That reveals that he is the only man on the ranch with a different skin color; it also reveals that he was treated differently because when the story was based on when segregation was happening. Another example is when crooks were telling Lennie he cannot come into his room he says, “This is my room, nobody got a right here but me” (Steinbeck 68). That reveals that no one comes into his room because he is African American. It also reveals that he does not stay with the other men since he sleeps in a different place than the other men. In sum, Crooks is one of the loneliest characters because he is not white, so he gets treated differently. The purpose is to reveal that Candy is lonely because he is old and has no relatives. For example, when Lennie was talking to George about his dream, he says, “I aint got no relatives nor nothing” (Steinbeck 59).
