Poverty was a challenging problem in the 1930s. American author John Steinback included poverty in his novel "Of Mice and Men" to warn the people about the effects that are associated with poverty. Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men in the 1930s; even though we are far removed from it, poverty is still a big challenge in today's society. Poverty was the problem in the 1930s. Congress passed the National Housing Act in 1949. This Act made it to where it reduced house cost and raised house standards. Poverty had an effect on all of the characters in the books and it shows how the characters dealt with it. Moreover, they didn't have much money at all and had to save up for their dream land while making $50 a month. Steinback pg 59 (Steinback pg 59). They are not making enough money for their dreamland and also they are working everyday to just barely make the minimum. In addition, all the workers come to the ranch and have this idea of getting money and getting their own piece of land, but they always quit and give up. Steinback pg 74 (Steinback pg 74). People who worked on the ranch always wanted to be free and get their own land. They could never do it because it was too hard and they just ended up giving up. In the same way, "the walls were whitewashed and the floor unpainted"(Steinbeck pg 18). This shows their poor living conditions and how they have to live like this. Poverty is a problem in society. This is because they were going from job to job to save up money to live on their own and they were getting paid poorly. Poverty is also a big problem in today's society. People are struggling everyday trying to make a living for themselves and their families, so people are calling this the silent depression. For example, Tiktok creators have made a theory that we are going through a silent depression right now. They are saying it is as severe as the great depression and other people feel uneasy about this and don't agree,
