John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California on February 27, 1902. He grew up in a small rural town on an agricultural valley. This, along with the Pacific Coast, served as the setting for some of his greatest works. Some of his notable works are Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, and East of Eden. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1940 and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962. Sadly, Steinbeck passed away on December 20, 1968 in New York City due to heart problems.

Settings The story Of Mice and Men is set during the Great Depression during the 1930’s. The story starts of by a stream near the Salinas River south of Soledad, California. The setting then moves to a ranch where the majority of the story takes place.
