Both Gatsby and Lennie have very similar dreams but they both occur in altogether different settings during the same era. In Of Mice and Men the first scene takes place in a field, it was the most beautiful field Lennie had ever seen. It could be compared to Eden for its serenity. This is a peaceful setting and that is why it is where Lennie first comes before the incident of killing Curley’s wife and the last place he goes to afterwards. Lennie is shot by his friend George at the ending of the novel for the reason that if he did not do it someone else would have and it would not have been as peaceful as George made it. Where as Gatsby’s death was in a beautiful and lavish scenery: his pool, he died alone with nobody near him and he had no idea what was coming. He died with his wealth that he spent his entire life working for surrounding him with his exorbitant mansion. That mansion was one of the main settings in the novel because it was apart of Gatsby’s dream in the sense that it was across from where his love Daisy lived and every day at the end of his dock he could see the green light flickering and that was a symbol for his dream and it is the reason why Gatsby lives there. There is the symbolism of water in each novel, Lennie dies staring out at the water hopeful that his dream will come true and Gatsby’s dream is just across the water from his mansion waiting for him but it seems so far fetched for the both of them. The general setting in The Great Gatsby is very extravagant for the reason that there are two Eggs, first of all the is the East Egg that represents the old money that people inherited and that is how these people were wealthy and it was a very luxurious place whereas West Egg represented the new money where everything was very extravagant as
