Originality comes from new ideas that is never seen before. Plagiarism is when ideas and words are taken from another source. Looking at Mrs. Aidas by Sheila Kaye-Smith and Sanctuary by Nella Larsen, the two stories were published at different times yet have the same plot making each story predictable to the readers. How do readers consider what is plagiarism when reading a work of literature? To be considered a plagiarism is when the ideas and words are taken from another source. Sanctuary written by Nella Larsen is a work of plagiarism taken from Mrs. Aidas written by Sheila Kaye-Smith, from the plotline to when the story was published Larsen falls behind Kaye-Smith.

The communication between the mother and the killer for Larsen’s piece shows that the only reason she lets him leave was because he was the same race as her and she won’t turn her back to her own race. Kaye-Smith’s story wasn’t as powerful, because the mother doesn’t make an appearance after she unlocks the door for the killer. She doesn’t give a reason as to why she would let the killer go free. Even though Larsen’s ending comes out stronger then Kaye-Smith, the outline of her story is still the same as Kaye-Smith which means her story is still seen as a plagiarism.
The facts shows that Larsen’s piece was a plagiarism yet it has a stronger ending then Kaye-Smith, but as long as her piece was written after Kaye-Smith it doesn’t matter how brilliant her writing was. Even if the plagiarism was not meant to be a plagiarism it doesn’t matter how much Larsen explains herself. The readers and critics has judged her and her career as a writer was over. By plagiarizing another’s work with or without knowing is damaging to a person’s own abilities. How original can a person be if they can unknowingly plagiarize another’s work so
