This interview with Son House defines the early days of Robert Johnson’s development from an amateur musician to a highly developed musician in the Delta Blues style. Johnson had traveled to differing regions in the Delta and learned many of the musical foundations for this blues style. House (2017) was Johnson’s neighbor (and well known blues musician) in Robersonville, Mississippi.

This source defines the important influence of Son House’s slide guitar playing, which Johnson had learned in Mississippi. House was an extremely prodigious player of the slide guitar method, which became a foundation for Johnson’s increasing reliance on acoustic guitar playing as a foundation for the Delta Blues style. Fetherolf (2014) defines the impact of Son House on Johnson’s playing, but more so, how Johnson expanded and developed this form of playing to a much higher level.
