“The hunger games”, a famous Novel written by Suzzane Collins, through an imagined dystopian world that is similar to our own world. Characters have to live in dehumanised, wretched, fearful lives. This unfair society is brought by a totalitarian government. Throughout the novel, a wide variety of thematic concerns can be seen that take place in the occurring events. A major theme of survival and sacrifice is brought by the events of the novel. Through Foreshadowing, tension and anticipation is created for the survival and sacrifice of the characters. This could be seen when Katniss volunteers as a tribute in the place of her sister Prim, this hints at the dangers and sacrifices Katniss will have to face to survive. The second technique that is employed to convey the theme of survival and sacrifice is symbolism. The Mockingjay pin slowly becomes the symbol of rebellion that represents the survival and sacrifice of Katniss Everdeen. …show more content…

Irony is revealed as a technique, where it is used to show power and control. The capitol’s (totalitarian government) oppression over the districts is rather ironic since they rely on the resources that the districts supply but keep them subjugated and starved. This irony represents the imbalance of power between the capitol and the districts, where the capitol has a priority to stay in power. The theme of power and control could also be seen in the setting of the novel. The lower districts could be seen as a dehumanised, disease ridden lifestyle displayed among the civilians. Living spaces, shops, infrastructure could be seen as damaged, dirty or old. This deeply supports the idea of the oppression caused by the capitol towards the
