Kimberly Haskins Gina Swanson Intro to sociology 5 November 2014 Film Analysis of Office Space The movie Office Space, is a fictional story about three friends living the typical corporate office nightmare. At least once in our lives, we have worked a job we despised. This paper will be a film analysis over the movie. It is a movie in which all of us can relate to. Office Space was released in 1999 with Mike Judge directing and writing the screenplay (IMDB 2). The film is about “Three company workers who hate their jobs and decide to rebel against their greedy boss.” (IMDB 2) Office Space can be viewed with multiple sociological perspectives which is an understanding of human behavior by placing it within its broader social context (Henslin 1). These lenses include conflict theory, functional analysis, and symbolic interactionism. The setting of Office Space takes place in Houston, Texas in the mid to late 90’s at a software company and focuses on employees who have had enough of their grueling jobs. Right in the middle of therapy, the therapist suffers a heart attack and dies in the middle of hypnotizing Peter, leaving him in his hypnotized state. He blows off work the next day and ignores seventeen voice messages from his boss. Peter develops apathy at work and does not follow norms in regard to dress code and parking spaces. When Lumberg tries to talk to Peter, Peter turns his back on his boss leaving Lumberg in shock. Norms are defined as expectations of “right” behavior. He parks in his boss’s reserved space, goes to work in casual wear which included flip flops, brings down a cubicle wall that blocks his view out the window and steals the office printer.
