My work and volunteer experience and my professional goal are committed to provide service to the community with cultural competence, diversity and service orientation. Without a doubt, OU-HCOM provides an excellent medical education with numerous learning opportunities for research and clinical work at Cleveland Clinic South Pointe Hospital. The unique location of OU-HCOM in Cleveland, an urban area with a diverse patient population will expose me to countless experiences that will help mold me into a more well-rounded, compassionate, and skilled physician. I want a school in an urban environment with a diverse patient population that will prepare me to practice medicine in a similar setting. During my undergraduate and graduate years, I maintained full-time employment to ensure college remained affordable for my family and I. Hence, my employment experiences have provided me with a great respect for social and ethical views that differ from my own which will allow me work well with others from diverse backgrounds. In addition, my extensive employment history has granted me with the work ethic required to endure the strenuous work schedule of both a medical student and physician. Furthermore, working at the University of Miami Hospital, specifically, has enlightened me about the practicalities of providing direct patient care. Having the opportunity to work with underserved populations has sparked my interest in an area of medicine I previously did not know about. As a volunteer, I served as a patient advocate. As part of my responsibilities, I sat with the patients before, during, and after their visit to make sure their needs were met. Not all of these conversations were intense and deep-rooted, but to see the overall impact I was able to have on the patients as a volunteer was what caused me to be enamored with medicine. In addition, being a patient advocate was a great way to provide help to those that needed it the most.
Organization and Unit Mission, Vision, and Values; shared Governance Like with any company, everyone has a mission and a vision of what they want their company to accomplish. From the first day, a person is hired the companies mission, and vision statement is instilled into their employers. Their whole organization of that company’s structure is built and maintained by their mission’s philosophy, thus preparing them for setting goals and standards to take their business from a starter company to a company which is growing and providing their customers with the best of their product. Therefore, within the health care industry, there is no difference.
I would like to express my utmost gratitude for scholarship support at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. The funds allotted will greatly help me toward achieving my goal of becoming a physician. I am very involved in the TTUHSC SOM community along with my coursework. As a member of the student government, I am one of two Educational Policy Committee Representatives for my class. I help bring pertinent information about educational policy changes to our class and participate in post-course reviews to improve courses for future classes.
I collected data in over 800 patients and acquired the skill to do statistical analysis. I also developed proficiency in writing abstracts and presenting posters. In pursuit of my goal I am doing residency in Internal Medicine at an excellent program. Throughout residency I found great mentors who challenged me to improve my clinical and academic knowledge.

My first comprehensive exposure to the health care field was six years ago as a senior, during which time I participated in hospital-based schooling. This program allowed me to observe a multitude of different medical disciplines, with rotations in surgery, orthopedics, nutrition, dermatology, gastroenterology, neurology, administrative services, and many more. Three out of the five school days were dedicated solely to shadowing, and the other two were spent in the classroom learning various medical-centric studies. Once in college, I continued to shadow physicians whenever my class scheduled permitted. I participated in the 4-U Mentorship program, which paired me with a fourth-year medical student who was preparing to do his residency in general

Why did you decide to become a physician and how do you plan to use your time as an undergraduate student to reach your goal? *
Overcoming obstacles and improving myself through clinical experience, I learned of other essential qualities needed for success in the field. My greatest time of growth was during my junior residency in internal medicine. Working closely with physicians and developing a rapport with patients, I greatly enjoyed experiencing several areas of the field, from outpatient medicine to ICU to CCU. While the days were long and demanding, I left each night knowing that I had helped relieve my patients’ illness. That’s the reason I am only applying to Internal Medicine as my career; I am the type of person who has always had an acute awareness of other people’s suffering, which has led me to be an empathetic and caring physician.
This semester will be my second at the University of Arizona, at 33 years old with a high school education, it is an understatement to say that it was fairly intimidating to be immersed in an academic community of fresh young minds straight out of high school. My strategy for this new chapter in my life has been to reflect on and use my past experiences for guidance and to have a clear set of goals that I continually draw upon for the motivation to keep pushing forward. The act of writing these goals down is not a new concept, in my previous career it was mandated that several times a year I would meet with a mentor and discuss and write down my personal and professional goals. I have continued this practice in my academic career.
