There were only 6 children that survived the explosion and they were dug out of the bottom of all the debris by hand (PBS). Timothy McVeigh used an old getaway car to leave the scene. He was later caught because he had left a trail of evidence behind. The rear axle of the Ryder truck was found with a serial number on it. It was then traced back to the rental place where he had signed with an alias. However, during the investigation in Junction City, Kansas where the rental truck was purchased. The investigators fanned out and was looking for evidence of where the rental truck had been. One agent went to a motel and had questioned a clerk there asking if there had been a Ryder truck in their lot recently. The clerk did remember and mentioned that someone did have one while staying there. McVeigh had made a grave mistake by signing his own name on the receipt. Since, they were not experienced or fully prepared to deal with the needs of the victims after the bombing they had to learn new ideas along the way. The Federal Government decided that four main ideas needed to be considered after researching the events after the bombing. The first, is that the crisis must be dealt with. Regardless of how hard the scenario seems we must pull together and help the people. Second, the post crisis victim needs must be met. This includes the first responders’ needs at the time of the incident and their mental health needs afterwards. Third, victims’ rights and services must be provided during the criminal justice process. This is taking into the consideration of the victims and their rights to see the judicial proceedings carried out.
