Oklahoma Sooners Football People travel from all over Oklahoma and the United States to watch Oklahoma Sooners Football. From waiting for hours outside of Gaylord Memorial Stadium to finally getting in to watch the game, OU Football has definitely earned their spot as one of the biggest hot spots in College Football. Through the nail-biting games to the blowouts and loses, OU Football is one of the most successful programs in College Football history. Billy Sims was a star running back for Oklahoma in the 1970’s. Billy was a two-time All-American and won the Heisman (“Pro Football Reference”). Adrian Peterson was a running back for the Sooners from 2004 to 2007. He rushed for 1,925 yards as a freshman and holds the NCAA freshman record (White 37). Baker Mayfield was Oklahoma’s quarterback from 2015 to 2017. He won the Heisman his senior year at OU and threw for 4,627 yards and 43 TD’s in 2017 (“OU Football”).
OU Football has been one very successful program since the start in 1895. OU Football has seven National Championships in the years 1950, 1955, 1956, 1974, 1975, 1985, and 2000 (“OU Sports Extra”). OU also has won ten Big 12 titles, 16 Big 8 titles, 11 Big 7 titles, and six Big 6 titles (“OU Sports Extra”). OU has been to 50 bowl games and have won 29, while having a four-year win streak from 1954-59, 1972-76, and 1979-81 (“OU Football”).
OU Football has been a successful program in the NCAA including the coaches, players, and traditions like the fight song or the Pride of Oklahoma.
