The Okonkwo last name was originated in the country of Nigeria. And at my young age, I have been informally dealt with the task to carry on the culture and legacy of being an Okonkwo. The name Okonkwo is strong to the Igbo culture, a primary group in Nigeria. Not only does it represent symbolic culture, it also represents who you are as a person.
The name Okonkwo means that you are strong…that you have strong ties to the spirits of the city in my native language. In Nigeria, when one hears the name Okonkwo they look and glorify the person knowing that he/she is a strong person. One not to be messed with. Because the name Okonkwo is very rich in the Igbo culture, every single person named Okonkwo will have high expectations in what they do in life. Because I was born and raised in the United States, some of the norms and values were altered.
For example, in the Igbo culture, at the age of 4, you are supposed to begin helping around the village. Sweeping outside, associating with your fellow age mates, and more. But for me, was not allowed to sweep because of the different environment. The material culture in the United States is completely different than the material culture in Nigeria. But not music from my native country. Music from Congo and Ivory Coast. Every Saturday morning, I used to ride with my dad. He would visit subculture groups and try to finically help them. While driving, he would play music from Congo and Ivory Coast and whistle along to the beat while I would begin to dance in my seat. Every time my father played Congo or Ivory Coast music in the house, I would always dance to it. But if it was music from Nigeria, I would take a seat. Before parties, my dad would play Congolese music and I will dance to it. I was basically backstage (home) practicing what I will do frontstage (at the
