The book I was assigned to read was Olaudah Equiano, The Interesting Narrative and Other Writings, Edited by Vincent Carretta. New York: Penguin Books, 2003. This narrative is about Equiano’s life and how he was enslaved and his journey of becoming a free man when he was able to save enough money to buy his freedom in 1767. Equiano is known his autobiography but also his efforts in Great Britain as an activist for the abolitionist movement. Equiano’s purpose to writing this book was that it was his autobiography and he wanted to be able to reflect on his own life but also so people may know about Olaudah Equiano and his struggles of becoming a free man. I do not believe Equiano was writing this as a history book instead a life story of his journey from slave to free man. Equiano did write in specific details of his surroundings meaning he describe his experience in Virginia and in Barbados, but he did not always have every specific detail of what was going on outside of his surrounding area. To what extent have our expectations and standards of accuracy changed since the author’s time? Now people want the specific details of what is most important and to skip of the fluff that is in between, people want to have the most important detail and the most exciting part of history. What devices did Equiano use to establish the credibility of his Interesting Narrative? The fact that Equiano used first person in his narrative made it more personal and made the readers imagine themselves ad Equiano and his experiences that he wrote about. What evidence does the book provide about Equiano’s role in the antislavery movement? Equiano actually wrote about his tours about him being a pioneer towards the abolitionist movement in Western European area and how it is important to end slavery.
