When choosing a portrait to analyze, some may have a very difficult time doing so due to the abundance created over the years. For my analysis, I chose the portrait called Washington, General Lafayette and Tilghman at Yorktown. This painting, done by Charles Willson Peale depicts the three generals after their victory at Yorktown during the American Revolutionary War. As a response to the victory, the Maryland House of Delegates asked Governor Thomas Sim Lee to commission Charles Willson Peale to paint the portrait- which he finished in 1781.

The artwork depicts a group of guys camping in the foreground and Bierstadt's painting supplies can be seen in the right corner, It portrays the magnificence and majesty of the setting. The artwork is based on sketches Bierstadt created while visiting the western United States on his second visit as a member of a government expedition to plan a route to the Pacific. Viewing Emanuel Leutze’s Washington Crossing the Delaware painting evoked a great deal of emotion. Upon walking into the room filled with American landscape paintings, the enormous size demanded all my attention temporarily making me forget about the rest of the paintings. The longer I gazed at the artist’s magnificent triumph, the more I felt a part of this historic venture. The painting is oil-on-canvas, and it’s not the only painting Leutze made. The first version of this painting was damaged by a fire, and the second painting, which is a full-sized replica of the first, was begun shortly after the first version was damaged.
Henri Ponchin had a similar painting style, but I finally concluded to write about a painting from Antoine Ponchin titled The Roman Ruins.
This acrylic painting was completed by Lawrence Smith, and is representational. Smith uses lines and color to divide the areas and to give each element its figure. He uses mostly cool colors (green and blue) which gives the painting a sort of calming effect. Smith uses proportion to show that the light house is further away by making the rocks larger and the trees smaller. He used shapes like triangles for the tree branches.
In the background of the painting, Farnsworth gives the audience a wonderful valley which surrounds the figure of Pontiac. The mountains reflect the greatest of the valley which are followed by a river in front of
In other words, McCloskey drew pictures of nature in such a way as to allow viewers see its beauty. For instance, the shadows created by the clouds seem so authentic that it allows the reader to appreciate them. This natural image is also viewed in McCloskey’s pictures
There are figures in the middle ground standing and sitting on a platform-type thing in the middle of a body of water while some of the people are actually inside the water. The foreground has 3 empty dark green colored rowing boats, one of the boats on the right is right next to a dock-type area. It’s a rectangular covered platform with 5 women standing. The background of La Grenouillère has light green trees growing. There is definite visible texture in the trees and the water, they both look realistic, the water even
