“Old Man with Enormous Wings” (1955), literally is a story depicting a mysterious man with wings who visited a Colombian family. The old man is caged in a chicken coop, and the town’s people pay the visit in his place. This novel wryly examines how human beings respond to those who are different, weak and dependent in the society. Cruelty and callousness are clearly illustrated throughout the book. When the people discovered that the man might be an angel, they don’t pay respect and homage to him. The people do not respond spiritually to the old man. Instead, they do it with coarse amusement. He appears to be neither fully surreal nor fully human. The man seems to be very human in that; he is surrounded by infirmity, squalor, filth, and disease. The angel has a human reaction to the town’s people who crowd around him seeking to heal. He remains indifferent to their pleas and sometimes he doesn’t even recognize their existence. Doctor is amazed by the questioning health of the old man. The angel persists and survives despite his unhealthy condition. The doctor is also struck by the wings of the man; they were very genuine and natural (Marquez, 96). Uncivilized society treats strangers in different ways, some coarsely and others were friendly. This story illustrates the challenges that foreigners encounter in a new savage society and how ignorant people of the community can be.
