Many new nations around the world face a dilemma of determining how they might govern themselves. For them there is a maze of government systems possible for use. However, there are two in which show immense similarity to each other. These two government systems are an oligarchy and a representative democracy, also known as a republic. Within both forms of government there is a group of leaders make decisions on behalf of the people. Specifically, an oligarchy is a system ran by a select few individuals who are considered privileged (“Oligarchy”). This totalitarian method of running a government does not give the people any sort of freedoms. These individuals are not selected by their people but rather fall within a social or military elite. Within a republic the group of representatives are limited with what they can act upon in their office. This is because the representatives are acting on behalf of the people and must adhere to the needs of the people (“What”). Within the United States a congress has been established whose purpose is to creates laws for the nation to follow. There is a second branch within the government of the United States which enforces the laws passed by the congress. This is also the area in which the leader, or president, is located in their government system. The third and final branch of this particular nation’s government is a system of courts who interpret the law and determines if the law agrees with the Constitution, an infrastructure of powers and procedures, of the United States. In place to ensure there is not a specific branch containing power is a system of checks and balances. This system is also in place to ensure each branch is kept together.
