The great leader Oliver Cromwell In the seventeenth century, the politician Oliver Cromwell was a Roundhead. Eventually known as the Lord Protector of England, Cromwell essentially rose to become a dictator. Militarily, Cromwell’s decisions and tactics made him a great leader. But in essence Oliver Cromwell was just that: a military leader, member of Parliament, farmer, puritan, but despite him being a puritan , he is still considered one of the most important statesmen in English history, who forever changed the British political landscape. Cromwell was born into a wealthy family who were part of “landed gentry in the region.” and in his early life he was baptized at The England Church, or known as the Anglican Church, and is the main Church of England. He was great with people and horses which are some skills that helped Cromwell be a great cavalry officer. Oliver was sent to Sidney Sussex College of Cambridge University by his father Robert, and his mother Elizabeth in 1616 to get educated when he was eighteen. Oliver maintained a great education but never got a degree. Meanwhile in at Cambridge he learned about devout Puritan. At the age of nineteen Oliver’s father fatally passed away which lead Oliver to return home from college. Around the age of twenty-one in 1620 he married a woman named Elizabeth Bourchier who was the daughter of a wealthy merchant and furrier. Cromwell had eight children with his wife Elizabeth after they got married. Eight years later Cromwell was elected into parliament in 1628 representing Huntingdon. He achieved many accomplishments while in the army for example, he helped establish the british army, gave himself commission, raised a troop of 60 cavalier and fought for more freedom of religion for the people in England. While being a soldier he raised other soldiers, training them thoroughly, looking after them to be a better person. Throughout the Civil War Cromwell is known for being military leader of Parliamentary without having any experience. Cromwell maintained a large part of the New Model Army which is an organization that fought against supporters of Charles the first during the English Civil War. Comwell is promoted to second in command of the New Model Army under Sir Thomas Fairfax. He took the king Charles l to trial for treason which means “attempting to overthrow the government of one's country or of assisting its enemies in war” and executed which many people at the time thank him. After Charles execution, England is considered as a commonwealth and many like the idea of it. Cromwell created a group called the Council Of State and was established in 1649. Cromwell led his army to gain victory and be successful. When Cromwell returned in 1650 he is chosen to be the Lord General, and the commander of all of Parliament’s forces.
