The second poem I chose is “On Being Brought from Africa to America” by author Phillis Wheatley. I quickly identified with her, after reading the author’s biography. Perhaps for being an immigrant in this country as well. This poem is short, but very powerful. It describes the difficult times that black people suffered due to slavery and also how lucky Phillis felt to be brought into a family in America that permitted and helped her to have access to education, thus making a drastic difference in her life. She definitely bit the odds by learning not only how to read and write, but also writing poetry for that era.
