The article “On French Island, Nudists Rebuff Clothing Rules,” talks about the people who live on the island, Ile du Levant, who are revolting the rule, which forces them to wear clothes. Ile du Levant is a nudist colony that was founded by two French brothers in the 1930s. Its uniqueness has attracted more and more people to settle on this island. People of Ile du Levant believe that clothes obscure their bodies and they want to live a naturist way. However, recently the president of the island, Mr. Gacon, came up a new rule to force people to put their clothes back on. If someone does not obey the rule, they will get fined. Mr. Gacon thinks that the nudist traditions interfere with the solidary and appearance of Ile du Levant. Many islanders think that the restraining order contradicts the purpose of the island and they are trying to protect their old customs and resist to the new rule. …show more content…

Social culture is something that has been there for a long time. People are used to the social culture of nudity on the island and they see it as a norm that everyone in this culture follows. According to the article, nudity has been the traditional culture in Ile du Levant. When the two French brothers established the colony in Ile du Levant, they created the rule that people could be nude in order to be close to nature. People who settled on the island later also came for the same reason. As a result, deep in people’s mind, Ile du Levant is the place where people do not need to wear clothes.
