A river is recognized for its steady water flow and tranquil atmosphere. Maya Angelou mentioned “ A River sings a beautiful song, Come, rest here by my side.”(Angelou 5). Maya is expressing the truth that as humanity became more materialistic, it lost its connection to nature. One of the most wonderful things we have in this world is nature, yet as a society, we are losing contact with it. There is more to nature than we have learned or discovered, and as time passes, other things tend to push us away from discovering and seeing those things. The Tree is symbolized as growth and strength. A Tree is known for how tall they are and how long they live. A tree gives and has a lot of benefits. “Today, the first and last of every Tree Speaks to humankind. Come to me, here beside the River. Plant yourself beside me, here beside the River.”( Angelou 8). The tree is thanking humanity by doing so. The tree is now appreciative of the person's kindness. Angelou wants us to grow and give our nation the strength it needs.
