Maya Angelou was the first black woman on a U.S. quarter, the first black woman cable car conductor, and a fantastic author and poet. Maya Angelou is an African-American writer who was born in 1928. Angelou had many jobs, including being a professor at Wake Forest University, but her true love was writing. Following this, Maya’s career began when she wrote an autobiography called “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.” She also performed a poem she wrote called “On the Pulse of Morning” at Bill Clinton’s inauguration. Many people saw Maya Angelou perform her poem and loved her work. Numerous people loved Maya’s poem “On the Pulse of Morning” which she recited at the same presidential inauguration in 1993 in front of a crowd filled with more than five hundred thousand people. Maya’s recitation of her poem was the first recited poem at an inauguration ever since 1961. Because of the performance, Angelou and her writing gained popularity and became one of her most famous poems. Furthermore, that poem received a Grammy for the audio in 1994. But these weren’t the only things that made Maya Angelou the person she is today. She was an activist who stood up for what she believed in, including civil and women’s rights. Maya uplifted many with her wisdom, and she was an extraordinary writer who used her poems and fame to speak out for what she believed in. Angelou inspired many writers of all races to pursue their dreams and follow a profession in writing. Maya Angelou was persevering, brave, wise, and an incredible person in her character and career. Even struggles can help make you stronger as they did with Maya, as she faced poverty, sexism, and racism throughout her lifetime.
