An African American woman that was involved in the arts from being poet to a producer. As a young adult, faced with many trials and tribulations, working multiple jobs, Maya Angelou became a writer and poet. A well- respected figure representing and defending the black culture and women as a Civil Rights Activist. Worked with other admirable figures such Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X. A woman who wasn’t afraid of judgement and ridicule that was bestowed on her for being a powerful African American woman. Additionally, when I was younger, my mother used to sit my sister and I down and tell us about the wonderful African American women that made a difference and sparked a change, not only for African American women but for our whole race. The individuals ranged from Rosa Parks to Robin Williams and more. Particularly, out of all the people she told us about, one woman stood out more than the others. She would read these poems about women and how strong our people were and I could relate to the poet when I was feeling quite insecure about myself and they would instantly broaden my day and make me feel like the confident black beauty that I am. Along with Langston Hughes, this poet examines the struggle of the African American people in their everyday lives. As I developed into a young woman, I became fonder of the wonder woman, Maya Angelou, because I began to relate as a young woman going through situations that have put me in many binds. Furthermore, a true inspiration to many young black girls in the world that have doubted themselves and feel unappreciated by the world. Influenced by this astonishing woman, my mother bought the book by Maya Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings which examines Maya Angelou’s life maturing. This book was the first
