Lukas Mason Title of the Text: Unbroken Author: Laura Hillenbrand Section: Chapter 1 - 5 Summary: As chapter 1 begins, Louie Zamperini, a 12 year old boy is introduced. He was born in Olean, New York but he and his family moved to Torrance, California when he was just two years old. He began to cause havoc in his neighborhood. His fearless and troublesome personality is displayed as he got in trouble with the law by stealing food and money, creating pranks, and getting in a number of fights.
Just imagine if you were born with not being able you to do any physical activities. Doodle, also known as William Armstrong, was born just like this. The narrator, which is Doodle’s brother, is very proud of what Doodle has accomplished over the past three years of his rough life. There is a plan for the narrator and Doodle to make his life better, maybe even more than one plan. Doodle is a disappointment to the family, until he does physical activities with his brother.
Tim Riggins is your prototypical bad boy football player. He is a womanizer drunk who doesn’t really care about anything so he is perceived as kind of a big time jerk. Deep down there is more to him than what you see on the surface like there is with everyone else. Tim is a big-hearted caring guy who is very loyal to the ones he loves. He sat by his friend Street’s side throughout the whole process of him being paralyzed.
The short story “The Knife” utilizes various forms of diction to strengthen the quality of the text. He uses imagery in order to draw the audience into the story. Vivid phrases, such as “the tight click of clamps” and “the tough fibrous sheet” create a description that resonates with the audience. Selzer uses diction to create the tone and mood of the story. In the opening paragraph, his word choice suggests that the speaker is a murderer; in later paragraphs, it is implied that the speaker is a surgeon trying to save a patient.
Devices Used In Bury The Lead In Bury The Lead by David Rosenfelt, the author uses a number of different devices that were credited by Edgar Allan Poe. The main character of this novel is Andy Carpenter, who is the lawyer, but can also be considered the detective in the book. In the novel, Mr. Carpenter is the defense attorney for a journalist who was convicted of murder.
Accepting When You Are Wrong In Nick Flynn’s memoir, Another Bullshit Night In Suck City, the narrator, Nick, and his father, Jonathan have developed a negligent relationship among each other. Nick has many encounters with his father, where he could have approached him in order to reconnect the father son bond but he does not. However, Nick does feel that not only is his father lost but he is as well.
The quote “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass it’s about learning how to dance in the rain” means that we should learn how to our lives even at struggling times of our lives. There are times when we are feeling down or going through tough times. Weather it’s bad grades or a tragic event. I can make a text to text connection from this quote. In the book “We Beat The Street” by George W Jenkins, Rameck Hunt, and Sampson Davis, is about a how three african americans from Newark, New Jersey became successful doctors.
Charlie by, Lee Maracle is about a young Indian boy who goes to a catholic school. Charlie dreams about going outside and exploring but the school will punish him if he does. One a day a group of kids including Charlie sneak out to go to one of their families houses. When they get their Charlie leaves to go to his family’s cabin. Unfortunately his long journey is cut short by frost bite and he dies of hypothermia.
Jaycee was an innocent 11 year old girl who had never shaved her legs and in a matter of an hour was forced to perform sexual actions on an adult male. She didn't know why she was gaining weight when she was pregnant and didn't even attend a high school she stop schooling at 5th grade. She had her innocence and her life taken away from her. 14.) The authors intention with the title “A Stolen Life” is to indicate how she had her life stolen away from her by Philip and Nancy who raped her when she was just 11 years old.
If Pat Conroy is just one thing, it's tough. " Invictus" by William Ernest Henley is all about being tough and never giving up when facing adversity; Pat Conroy has faced adversity his entire life, but in the face of it all, he has never given up and shown why he truly is unconquerable. Throughout Pat Conroy's childhood, he was beaten and abused, and put through an incredibly difficult and violent lifestyle. He took both physical and verbal abuse from his father and was constantly told he was weak and he had no talent.
It should be established before anything else that the author I have chosen, Kurt Vonnegut, was heavily influenced by World War II. The idea of war, along with its devastating effects, gave Vonnegut a rather cynical and twisted view on human nature. This perspective bleeds over onto his writing and can be seen in many of his major and minor works, including one of his most impactful, “Slaughterhouse 5,” in which he uses time travel, alien planets, and other farfetched ideas to describe the physical and emotional consequences of violent acts. Vonnegut’s fatalistic and overly pessimistic view of the future, most likely stems from the very problems created by The World Wars. The mechanization and automation of weaponry caused an emotional disconnect to form that removed the face-to-face contact experienced in previous wars.
He was a twelve year old boy; funny, smart, precocious and “the real deal.” One day Betito was playing with his cousins when some gang members opened fire on him. Betito died in the hospital. Father Greg found it incredibly hard not to hate the two men who killed Betito. Father Greg found out who the two were, and writes, “Kids I love killing kids I love.”
The year is 2016 and American society is open-minded to so many issues, except televised stereotypes. Racial and gender stereotypes are continually reinforced by social media and television, it has played a major role in the way society views one another. Enabling stereotypes that have been associated with a person of specific race or gender in the media promotes prejudice. Meaning society expects that person to act a certain way based on what they have witnessed on television or social media. . A perfect example of how television shows incorporate stereotypes based on ethnicity is the tv show “Everybody Hates Chris “which is about a working class African-American family that lives in a poor urban neighborhood in New York.
“Greasers will still be greasers, and socs will still be socs” (Hinton 117). In the Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton, friendship is taken to a whole new level. The greasers stick together even if it cost their lives. The soc’s friendship causes a life to be taken.
There are many misconceptions about the autism spectrum disorder and how it is portrayed in the media such as, people who have this disorder cannot reciprocate emotions and does not feel sad or happy. Another myth is people who have this disorder are intellectually disabled. These are all just myths on how autism is portrayed, for this assignment I have decided to choose Dr. Shaun Murphy on the show, Good Doctor. The Good Doctor is a based on a South Korean Drama that has been renewed for an American television show. It is a new show that was released in September 2017.
