Literary Essay: On the Sidewalk Bleeding In the short story On the Sidewalk Bleeding by Evan Hunter, the author shows how joining a gang is bad because it will affect people. There is a guy named Andy who gets stabbed because he is in a gang and he starts bleeding to death. Soon people started walking by him and they would not help him because he was in a gang. Then no one would help him; he ended up bleeding to death in an alleyway. In this story, Hunter uses dialogue and symbolism to show that people need to make good decisions because it can affect ones later down the road. (Hunter 76). This shows that when he walked down the alleyway, all of Andy's hope just went away and he thought he was going to die. As a result, this shows that he is in a gang that will hurt you. This makes the reader think that he will get help, but then he doesn't. But this was shown in dialogue in the story by the drunk guy when he talked. In this short story, it has a theme at the middle of the story: it's ironic. He was still dying and he was lying on the floor and the rain just kept making his blood come out. I don't want to help him because he is a royal The reason that she doesn't want to help is because he joined a gang and she knows if they help him the other gang will be after them so she knows she can't help him. So this shows irony because he joined a gang so it ends up being his fault that he is dying. Dialogue and irony are themes that he experiences in the street. In "On the Sidewalk Bleeding" by Evan Hunter it shows that he is going to die on the street because no one will help him. At the end of the story, he ended up dying on the sidewalk because no one would have helped him because he was in a gang and his gf found him outside dead and even the cop did not help him.
