War brings out the worst and best in people.The author Morris Gleitzman of the historical fiction novel Once, tells the story of a young Jewish boy who grew up in the midst of World War ll, right in the centre of its fury and flames. The protagonist Felix Salinger invites the reader on a journey of self discovery, determination and the importance of books to the young mind. Gleitzman conveys the themes using a variety of techniques such as point of view, symbolism and ellipsis. The incredibly well-written and overwhelming story demonstrates the challenges faced on a journey in which the main protagonists learns more about themselves and the world around them. The historic fictional novel Once was written in a first person view and perspective, which connects the reader with the main character, therefore allowing the reader to respond to Felix's attitude of never giving up, determination and growing from his mistakes. An example of determination is when Felix's shows the act of never giving up and pushing through the obstacles faced on the physical journey. Gleitzman demonstrates this through the use of the literacy technique 'point of view' in the quote "part of me wants to run away, another part wants me to move on."
