Throughout the true story “One Child” by Torey L. Hayden, I have learned much about the behaviors of the students and been able to relate some of my own experiences to the book. I read the 1980 copy of the story. Torey Hayden teaches a self-contained special education classroom of 9 children, with one full time aide, Anton, and a student helper, Whitney. Anton, prior to this job has never worked with children before, let alone children with emotional and behavioral disorders. Over time they become a great team, despite the numerous challenges with the students. One of the main characters I have chosen to look at specific behaviors is Sheila. Sheila is an interesting character to learn about and has a violent past, both in being the victim and the attacker. There are many aspects of teaching that can be learned through this story and Torey Hayden. We learn how important rapport is with children with rough backgrounds. Additionally, we also learn how crucial teaching rules and expectations is in any classroom setting! Sheila’s past, descriptive details, antecedents that trigger behaviors, internal or external risk factors that may be contributing to behaviors. 3A.
