One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, by Ken Kesey, took place in a mental hospital during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The narrator, Chief Bromden was a patient in a mental hospital for ten years. In the beginning of the book Chief was dominated by his fear of the Combine. The combine was “a huge conglomeration that controls society and forces people into conformity.” (SparkNotes Editors) For the majority of the story Chief pretended to be deaf and dumb to avoid attentions. The mental hospital divided the patients into two groups, the Acutes and the Chronics. The Acute was the group where patients can still be cured while Chronics was the group where patients were beyond saving. The hospital was run by a woman called Nurse Ratched. After the television event McMurphy started to taunt Nurse Ratched and the staffs. Soon McMurphy learned the fact that he can’t leave the hospital unless Nurse Ratched allowed him to. That means Nurse Ratched can keep McMurphy in the hospital until McMurphy die. As a result McMurphy started to obey Nurse Ratched and follow her instruction. By the time McMurphy realized he had to obey order he already became someone the patients look forward to. One of the patient, Cheswick, committed suicide when McMurphy refused to help Cheswick in a stand against Nurse Ratched. After Cheswick’s death McMurphy learned the fact that only he and Scanlon was committed, meaning everyone else who is an acute can leave whenever they want. McMurphy was angry and questioned other why didn’t they leave and the response was they don’t have the gut. After a group meeting McMurphy went up to the nurse's station to get some cigarette. McMurphy punched through the glass and claimed the glass was too spotless that he forgot it was there. The doctor of the hospital accepted the proposal and went on the trip with the acute, Chief and a prostitute called Candy. While on the boat the Acutes are fishing while McMurphy and Candy were having sex in cabin below deck. On the way back McMurphy insisted they drive past his childhood home, Chief suspected it was because McMurphy’s first time with a girl was when he was ten and the girl was younger. When they came back to the hospital, McMurphy continued to fuel the conflict by getting into a fight with the staff. Chief also joined in and both ended up in the Disturbed ward for electroshock therapy. However, the therapy did not affect McMurphy in anyway or form. During the fishing trip Billy, one of the patient, arranged a date with Candy and it will be tonight. In order to get Candy in McMurphy bribed the night guard and sneaked Candy in. While the rest of the patients are doing drug and smoking, Candy and Billy were having sex. Billy always wanted to be a man but he was also a momma’s boy, this created the shy personality of Billy where Billy was afraid of many things. Because of this Billy constantly stutter when speaking. Through sex McMurphy was hoping to change Billy’s personality and fear. Next day the staff discovered the mess of last night; when Nurse Ratched found Billy and Candy, Billy was able to respond with no stutter.
