One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a film by Milos Forman released in 1975, based on an adaptation of the 1962 novel written by Ken Kesey. The film stars Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, and Will Sampson. The movie tells the story of Randle McMurphy, a criminal who was sent to a mental hospital to be evaluated if he is really mentally unstable or if he is faking it to avoid hard labor in prison for raping a 15-year old. Upon arriving at the hospital, McMurphy finds that the ward is run by the hard and resolute Nurse Ratched, who intimidates the patients by her manipulative tendencies and suppresses their actions through a passive-aggressive routine. McMurphy was in prison for breaking the law, nurse Ratchead was strict and obsessed with order and some of the patients voluntarily committed themselves there because of their inability to act in compliance with standards, rules or laws of the society. The theme of gender roles is seen in the way McMurphy hates Ratched or just that he hates female authority. Most of the male patients have been damaged by relationships with overpowering women. For instance, Bromden's mother is portrayed as a castrating woman; her husband took her last name, and she turned a big, strong chief into a small, weak alcoholic. One got to be mentally ill to be in the hospital at the first place as this is a place to recover from mental illness and be able to live with the outside world. Although he has his own self-interest, also knowing well that the others unlike him are really ill, he developed a sincere desire to resuscitate the men he came to know. Chief is the only one who gets true freedom from the captivity of the mental hospital and the captivity of his illness. According to the web dictionary cuckoo is mad or crazy. Given the title of the movie, the cuckoo’s nest would be the hospital and the one who flew over is Chief. As counselor I would want to use different methods of counseling that is not strict or too hard and manipulative to try to help mentally ill. Listening and get to know them better would help to find the best way to help mentally ill
