‘‘‘One of those things,”’ as referred to in Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s essay “What’s in a Name” in the book ‘Models for Writers, describes something as being just the way things are in the world (Rosa and Eschholz 378). It refers to the prominent, yet seemingly minute at times, racism in American culture. Author Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s purpose in telling the story is to reflect on an instance of racism in his life that can be brushed off but can also be reoccurring.
