Unlike many others, the okapi, native to it’s “hidden” habit of the Ituri Rainforest in central Africa, used its unique physical appearance and shy, elusive personality to outsmart researchers for centuries (“Okapi”-A-Z Animals). A relative of the well-known giraffe, the okapi proves to be one of the most unique, interesting, and confusing animals in the world. Many of us have seen a horse, a donkey, or a zebra at the zoo. On the first sight of an okapi, one would think it is a cross-breed of the three!
It would be an honor to be among the exemplary students who represent the National Honor Society. The first time I heard about NHS was in the second semester of my freshman year. Ever since then I pushed myself to work hard. Thinking that by pushing myself harder to get that A in that one academically challenging class, putting on a smile every day, and getting better at time management while displaying character, scholarship, leadership, and service will help me to become an NHS student who represents the ideology of the club. In many environments, in and out of school, I believe I display those qualities.
In Jeffrey Jerome Cohen’s Monster Culture (Seven Thesis), Cohen analyzes the psychology behind monsters and how, rather than being a monstrous beast for the protagonist of the story to play against, “the monster signifies something other than itself”. Cohen makes the claim that by analyzing monsters in mythology and stories, you can learn much about the culture that gave rise to them. In Thesis 1 of Monster Culture, Cohen proposes that “the monster’s body literally incorporates fear, desire, anxiety, and fantasy”, specifically the fear, desire and anxiety of the cultures that gave rise to it;; fFor example, vVampires, undead, represent a fear of death.
