Which is unfortunate because their setup along the beach was simply incredible. The Germans went through a lot leading up to and during the Invasion of Normandy. The Nazi empire was becoming a bigger target day by day. Adolf Hitler knew this, resulting in the birth of Directive 40. Directive 40 was HItler's plan to protect the Nazi empire from falling. The main goal of the this was to protect them from a coastal invasion of France. That's when he decided, he would build a wall protecting them from the coast, making them impenetrable. Hitler decided to name the “2,000-mile long chain of fortresses, gun emplacements, tank traps and obstacles “The Atlantic Wall”. (Atlantic). “Although one of the most impressive engineering feats of modern times American and British forces ended up breaching the seemingly impenetrable wall.”(Atlantic) The Nazis defenses ran along an 80-mile stretch of coastline.The plan to build this wall originated from what he called Directive 40. “The plan called for the construction of 15,000 separate concrete emplacements to be manned by 300,000 soldiers (both German troops and foreign conscripts).
