I always had an interest in the human body and how it functions. This interest led me to wanting to become an Ophthalmologist. An Ophthalmologist is a doctor who specializes in eye health. What makes them different from Optometrists is that they have to attend medical school, while Optometrists do not. Thats means I have to take several science courses and some math courses. If I attend Xavier University of New Orleans do there Pre-Medical Major, I would have to take chemistry and physics. Physics and chemistry are both important components of ophthalmology.
Physics is important in ophthalmology because of Optics. Optics is a branch of physics that involves the behavior and properties of light. On the other hand, it is just not their pharmacy program that is excellent. They are the number one school in the country for getting black students accepted in and completing medical school. This fact drew me to the school since I knew I wanted to go into the medical field. Also, it is a HBCU which I know would be a comfortable environment for me as a black woman. Xavier being a HBCU has other perks too, like their Greek Life. I think sororities are a good place to meet women with the same interests as me. They would also be a good support system. Xavier has almost every sorority and fraternity from the Divine Nine, the name given to the historical black fraternities and sororities. Furthermore, Xavier being located in the city is a major bonus. Even though I am open to new experiences and going to new places, but I feel that a city will have more opportunities and diversity. Also, it is close to home which is important because it will be my first time being on my own. So, I am still independent, but I will still have my family
