Addiction takes such an overwhelming toll on a person, along with those who surround them. From food addictions to much more serious ones such as drug addiction, play a huge role in daily lives. As people face these addictions they often find themselves asking why they can’t get better. Or if people are on the outside looking in, they wonder why addicts cannot get better, because after all they’re responsible for it. Well, for the most part addictions cannot be tamed very easily. Addicts don’t fully understand why they are incapable of staying clean, so why should we, the outsiders? To start off, it is very obvious to everyone around that quitting addiction can be quite the challenge. The thought of change from a daily routine to a new one can be very intimidating for some people: “Many humans fear change and they will use this as justification to accept a situation they know is miserable” (“Reasons People Fail to Overcome Addiction). Many people react to change in several different ways, some look forward to it, while some absolutely dread it. Addicts are so used to a daily routine of addiction that once they get away from it there is a whole other world waiting for them.
