Abortion has been around since the 1800’s, however, we are still struggling to stabilize it as a female's right. Any woman should have a way to a safe, sterile, and accepting abortion. The choice is more elaborate than just killing an unborn child. It is a complex mentality which can lead to a range of emotions, as well as the need for closure. It is something that is hard to understand without experiencing it yourself. Abortion by definition is “...the act of removing a human embryo or fetus from the uterus of a pregnant woman prior to the completion of the full term of pregnancy”(2016). In fact “...during the 1960s and 1970s in the United States, many states became more liberal in their abortion laws, allowing abortion for health reasons, or rape and incest”(2016). It is so looked down upon for women to have abortions, but yet sometimes it is not a choice. For example, women who are diagnosed with fatal diseases or disorders such as cancer, before or after conceiving, may need to undergo treatments such as chemotherapy, which is lethal for the developing child. Some may simply be too unhealthy to carry to term or deliver without serious risk to their own life. Obviously, each case differs in complexity and has a range of reasons explaining why abortion seemed the best choice. But clearly, not all women who abort is suffering from a traumatic event, some may not want to be a mother or do not have funds to raise a child. For one woman, Janice Avoy, the timing was not right, she was eighteen and about to start school to become a lawyer. One thing she says that stands out is “To the world, I am an attorney who had an abortion, and, to myself, I am an attorney because I had an abortion" (Avoy 2016). Undoubtedly, our welfare system is broken and in some ways corrupt. Many children are placed in homes with people who have little background checks. We hear of foster homes that are abusive and not safe for any child. According to the Suicide Prevention Resource Center “54 percent of foster children had been sexually abused before they were placed with foster families, while another 28 percent had been physically abused or neglected”(2014). Children in foster homes have little to no control over their life until they are either adopted into a good family or reach the age of eighteen and let out of the system. Even if a child is adopted or ages out and becomes successful, it is common for foster children to suffer from disorders such as anxiety or forms PTSD if abused. Although adoption can be an alternate choice to abortion, it does not make it
