Chapter 5 “The Revolutionary Era: Crossroads of Freedom,” This chapter focuses on Revolutionary era and the war between Britain and the colonies. It shed light on the lives of the African Americans during the war and the decisions they made to fight with or against the colonies they were enslaved in. How is freedom defined? In The Violent Bear it Away, Flannery O’Connor explores the impacts of religious influence in relation to the secular world. O’Connor, a devout Catholic, very clearly shares a similar perspective as the religious great uncle, Mason Tarwater. Mason’s great nephew, Francis Tarwater (simply referred to as Tarwater for most of the novel), struggles with the perspectives of both his great uncle and his uncle, a secular teacher (referred to as Rayber. Oppression is a continuous issue in societies globally. In United States history African Americans are a prime example of people that have been oppressed. During the 1800s and 1900s many reforms took place that was to help advance the lives of African Americans. Although the reforms were put into place African Americans continued to live in a society which they were oppressed, degraded, and seen as inferior. From this period of U.S. history many works of literature were created that expressed their views on how to approach and resolve the issue of oppression.
In “The Common Elements of Oppression” by Suzanne Pharr, she writes that isolation is a “major component” to the oppression of “minority groups”. The LBGT community depicted in the Harvey Milk film were disowned by their own communities that they lived, worked and were even born in. Well, in Anthem by Ayn Rand, the government is terrible and unstable, which causes Equality to lose his freedom and individuality. Anthem the main characters live in a dystopian society. During this week, we have covered numerous topics, none more prominent than the oppression of women. Everyone had different opinions, allowing me to take into account different views on the issue. In one of the texts we examined, “Oppression”, Marilyn Frye, a philosopher, debates the subjugation of women. She states the cultural customs that causes oppression of women. I do agree with her view that women are oppressed, but I do not agree that it is just women.
In the autobiography of “My Bondage and My Freedom” by Frederick Douglass”, the word victimization use by Frederick, is describing a particular person being a “victim”, a hopeless person that is unknown to the world system with no identity. As a result, slaves were people being victimized by the slavery system, including slave owners and non- slave owners. Although, African American were the main victims being discriminated by their character, why does Douglass believed that the slave owners and non- slave owners were also under the category of being victimize by the system? What common themes bond together the literary works of the 1800’s? Frederick Douglass and Kate Chopin both realized that people were not being treated fairly and thus it influenced their writing. Through personal experiences and observations Frederick Douglass conveyed how African Americans in My Bondage and My Freedom were treated unfairly. Kate Chopin used the plot to show how women were treated unfairly in “The Story of an Hour”. Over the course of history, many oppressive systems have been overthrown by the people whom they belittled. Even today, here in our country that boasts the ideology of freedom, we continue to be oppressed under the false pretense of education. Martin Luther King, in his "Letter from Birmingham Jail," shows the reader how a minority should fight for what is right and true when against a majority. King's suggestion provides a way of attaining greater social cohesion, by encouraging peaceful protests for one's cause, and for their beliefs and actions to be supported by arguments and evidence; not emotional appeals and/or dogmatism. Tradition thrives in majorities, because those who have the fortune of seeing why it's wrong, are, in many cases, unfortunately suppressed and are thus unable to promulgate their viewpoint; it is the majorities that squelch the ideas of minorities to prolong their interests. The only ray of hope we can have for a brighter future is one reinforced by positive change accompanied with open-mindedness; for then will truth and mankind's successful progress be within our
True freedom is without obstruction or restraint yet there are ways in which freedom leads to restraint. Many advances and opportunities gave rise during 1865 and 1910 in America along with it came a sense of freedom for the people who migrated or resigned there. People like Jurgis had the freedom to work, earned money, and own a home of their own, but in all reality they were not free but trapped by the very things that they had the freedom to obtain.
