Oprah Gail Winfrey was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, on January 29, 1954. Oprah was actually named “Orpah” on her birth certificate which came in the Book of Ruth, but people mispronounced it most of the time that she decided to just stick with “Oprah”. After Oprah’s birth, her mother traveled north and Oprah spent her first six years living in poverty with her grandmother, Hattie Mae (Presley) Lee ,she wasn’t financial stable that Oprah often wore dresses that was made out of potato sacks and local children would usually make fun of her because of that. Just like any other kid, Oprah’s grandmother would hit her with a stick when she doesn’t do chores or if she wouldn’t listen – in general. Oprah even said, that she felt betrayed by her family member who had sold the story of her son to the “National Enquirer in 1990”. She started going to Lincoln High School but after early success in the Upward Bound Program ( a program that provides opportunities for participants to do well in their precollege performance, this is for high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree.) Oprah’s mother, once more sent her to live with Vernon—Oprah’s father, in Nashville, Tennessee, but this time it was different, she did not take her back. Her father was strict but he would always motivate Oprah and he made sure Oprah’s priority was her education. Her father’s strictness has paid off when she became an honors student, she was also voted “Most Popular Girl”, and she also joined her high school speech team at East Nashville High School which she got second place in dramatic interpretation – which isn’t bad at all.
