I presented a book report in front of my English 3 class and educated the audience about Robert Penn Warren's life and career as a writer, as well give my opinion on the book All the King's Men: one of Warrens most popular. I spoke clearly, used my hands, and gave my facts about the author and book. I learned how calm down and talk in front of the class with confidence. I used creative thinking by presenting with my hands and using body language. My power point was appealing to the eye and was detailed with facts.
Successful public speakers tend to use the canons of rhetoric elements to craft their presentations in a way for their speeches to be more effective. The canons of rhetoric used in this presentation were intervention, arrangement, style, and delivery. Intervention is determining the goal of the presentation as well as the conducting research and providing facts to back the message. The arrangement of the presentation was well thought-out, the message was clear and concise from the beginning to conclusion. Style fit this presentation well and was arranged in a way to keep grasp the attention of the audience.
I feel that the speech that you chose was very unique. Robin Williams was such an amazing person and he truly connects with the audience every single time he speaks. I agree on how important it is for a speaker to maintain eye contact at all times to demonstrate respect and that he put effort at learning the words and at the same time being extemporaneous. Confidence is also a very important factor and Williams showed it throughout the whole speech. You did a wonderful job, just remember to include the main points and how he managed to pass from one point to another.
In my speech I discussed smoothie. I wanted to accomplish the goal of conveying to the audience that smoothie can be a nutrient-dense, on the go meal while providing the body with vitamins and mineral necessary for proper nutrition. I wanted to continue to work on having my speech sound more casual, not rehearsed and also try speaking at a slower rate Along with that; I wanted to continue not to let my nerves get the better of me. Before my speech, I was extremely engaged in the speaker that went before me.
In Daniel Rose’s article, Message, Messenger, Audience, he draws his definition from the Ancient Greek Philosophers. He gathered from their words and success, that the key element in an effective speech is ethos, logos, and pathos, from Aristotle, Cicero’s decorum, and Demosthenes delivery. This essay will also include an evaluation of the speech, “The Girl Who Silenced the World for Five Minutes” by Severn Suzuki, based on these parameters. Rose provides an excellent definition of content in effective speeches.
In the speech, I announced the terms that previewed the actual chords and the main points. While I did this, I spoke at a quick pace, but nevertheless with clarity for the audience to catch every word that I spoke. Speaking too quickly, the fast motions, and a few careless pronunciations really made the speech less appealing. After watching the video, I noticed how much I used void fillers. I would say “alright” and “so” quite often.
Giving a speech whether being for the public or not, offers personal, professional, and public benefits for the individual. The individual might find it easier to obtain a profession, build better relationships amongst peers, or even propel social movements by carefully constructing and delivering a well thought out speech. A speech needs to be excellent in order to do such things; it needs to have a clear concise thesis, a preview statement, a great organizational pattern, supporting material, memory, delivery and good representation of oneself. Thus, during the process of constructing and delivering a speech, one must have those aspects. This will ensure the speaker will deliver a powerful and moving speech.
After being chosen as the President of National Honor Society, the most active club at my school, one of my duties was inducting the new members each year. I remember the butterflies in my stomach as I looked out at all the NHS members and their parents sitting in the huge auditorium. My principal and head of school were both keenly listening to me speak as I prayed not to stutter on any words. However, with every word that left my mouth, I felt my level of confidence rising. After finishing off strong and hearing the roar of applause, I realized that effective public speaking is a vital leadership skill that I definitely
but I hope to become a more confident and formal speaker over the course of this class. Overall, I would consider myself well spoken, I have no trouble talking to adults, but when it comes to getting up in front of my peers, the nerves set in. I believe this is because I don’t have a lot of experience giving formal speeches, and this class will definitely help with that. Another goal of mine is to learn how to become a better speechwriter. I am looking forward to learning how to write and research a quality speech.
Being confident shows your audience you are comfortable talking about your topic and that you are well informed on what you are specking of. Another thing that I can improve on is relaxing, for example, to not be so nervous. If I can think two steps ahead before I speak it would prepare me for what I am about to say which will allow my words to flow out smoothly and correctly. I plan on improving these skills by practicing more speeches in front of people and doing some relaxation exercises before my speech. I believe by implementing more speeches and doing some of the exercises, it will have me more relaxed, keep my mind focused and boost up my confidence so that I may present my speech flawlessly for an A plus grade.
The audience that this ted talk is written for is people who are not very good in public speaking and want to know some tips and tricks. I also used my visual aid to help me with speaking points. If I was ever stuck I could always look back to regain my train of thought, these worked similar to notecards. My delivery had its highlights and its lowlights. My volume was good and I kept eye contact for a majority of the speech, only slipping up as a transitioned between notecards. However, I could hear my voice shake throughout the project as well.
As students, presentations are something that is required in most classes yet, students do not see themselves as public speakers. Throughout high school and now in college, I have had to present material in 80 percent of the classes that I have taken. Presenting was, and still is something that I struggle with no matter how big or how small the group is that I am presenting to. I knew that Public Speaking was a required class for me so, rather than putting it off, I decided to go ahead and get it out of the was as soon as possible. Speaking in front of people is out of my comfort zone.
The two key topics in class in the last weeks, for me. Two of the most relevant topics developed in the last weeks were: non-verbal communication and the barriers to communication. Everytime we communicate with another person or group of people, we have to take into account some factors other than what we are actually saying that can affect how the message is going to be received: body language, tone, intonation, facial expressions, and others; this is what we understand for non-verbal communication. As we saw in class “55% of communication is body language, 38% is the tone of voice, and 7% is the actual words spoken.”
In society today, communication classes are highly over looked because of our new developing technology. People don’t realize how much a communication class could benefit them. We have lost sight of verbal communication skills. This class has taught me to put my phone down and communicate with others. It has opened my eyes to the real world without technology.
